Rail Comes to Whalesland
In 1850 Whalesland joins the Industrial Revolution with the first introduction of rail and steam power to transport cargo. This is very early in the process as shown in the image of above of both oxen and steam delivering wood to the Hillton sawmill.
The initial introduction to steam power is limited. Just the line from the Oldlock Timber plantation to the Hillton Old Sawmill consumes more the half of FTI's ¢200,000 capital. After 1850 the increase in steam power has to be funded by operation profits of the firm.
Ox and Steam Side-by-side
The transportation for the industrial complex Oldlock Timber plantation / Hillton Old Sawmill / Hillton Materials Wholesale shows the mix of animal and mechanical power early in the Industrial Revolution. By the end of 1850, 17 Ox teams and 4 Adler steam trains transported timber to the sawmill and 10 Ox teams transporting the limber planks to the Hillton Materials Wholesale market.
