---+ Knoppix Live Linux [http://knoppix.net/[Knoppix]] is a bootable cd that is an absolutely remarkable showcase of [http://opensource.org[open source]] technologies. It includes a fully functional Linux distribution with the latest in desktop management and productivity software. Sporting Ope<nop>nOffice.org 1.1.1, you can work in a full office suite supporting many of Microsoft's Office document formats, along with many others. Also included are numerous utilities to help you recover from many crash scenarios, including Microsoft Windows XP OS mishaps. And if you are just into a bit of diversity in your funtology studies, you can try out the many games that come standard with a Linux system. Last, but not least, software developers who have been itching at exploring the posibilities of software design on Linux systems will want to know that a complete development environment has been included as well. =)

What makes Knoppix so great is that it will run on nearly any computer straight off of the CD. It does not have to install on the harddrive like most other Linux distributions (however you may want to install a harddrive based Linux distribution if you determine that you like it. Check out [http://www.distrowatch.com/[DistroWatch]] for more distros.) This makes it great as a portable workstation and rescue environment.

---++ Getting Knoppix The latest version of Knoppix can always be found at http://knoppix.net/get.php. Make sure you read the Downloading FAQ on that page. If you have a working bittorrent client, we recommend that you download the torrent to save the load off of the mirrors. After downloading, just burn to CD! =)

---++ Using Knoppix Before booting off of your freshly burned CD, we need to check a few things. First off, Knoppix will not load if your BIOS is not set to boot off of a CD. Please see your motherboard's manual on instructions on making the CD boot before the harddrive. Note that most of the time, the BIOS is already set to boot off of CD except on older computers. Please see the [http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/FaqDownloading[FaqDownloading]] Wiki page on the Knoppix.net website.
